Community event in downtown Farmersville

A Historic Community in Progress

A rich agricultural past and plans for a bright future, Farmersville is the kind of place that more and more families and businesses are calling home. With small-town charm, family-friendly housing, a lively social life, and conveniently located at the intersection of two major state highways in the popular North Texas corridor, Farmersville is poised for major growth moving forward.

Downtown Farmersville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior (2017).

Once the “Onion Capital of North Texas,” Farmersville’s legacy features a historic downtown that treasures red brick streets and classic architecture, such as the 1865 gabled Bain-Honaker House and our restored 1930s Onion Shed that was the loading dock for the area’s massive onion industry and now hosts a variety of community events and farmers markets.

Art & Culture

Fine Arts on Main provides a center and performance venue for theater, live concerts, arts, and events throughout the year. The Farmersville Heritage Museum, located in one of two remaining onion sheds, features a variety of displays on our city’s history and celebrated local heroes, including Hollywood star and World War II’s most decorated soldier Audie Murphy.

Onion Shed

During its agricultural heyday, Farmersville annually shipped over 1,000 carloads of East Collins Sweets (Onions) out of a shed built in 1935 by the railroads. After the onion industry disappeared, the Onion Shed was restored in 2002 to host numerous activities downtown, including the Farmersville Market each month. The restoration won the 2003 Community Spirit Award from the Texas Downtown Association.

Annual Events

The Farmersville Market is held the first Saturday of each month (except January and October) at the Onion Shed where you’ll find fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, local cuisine, crafts, and jewelry.

Sparks of Freedom takes place on the Fourth of July at Southlake Park in Farmersville. The event features food, fun, music, games, and of course, fireworks, all to benefit the Farmersville Fire Department.

Audie Murphy Day is the fourth Saturday in June when Farmersville honors the birthday of our famous hometown celebrity and the most decorated veteran of WWII, Audie Murphy. It is also a time when we celebrate all of our local veterans. The day features a parade, a roll call of area veterans, and historic exhibits.

Old Time Saturday celebrates Farmersville’s rich heritage and raises funds for local causes. Hosted by the Farmersville Historical Society on the first Saturday of October,  activities feature a parade, music, family entertainment, car show, a 5K run, food, and fun. OTS was inspired by a 1935 issue of The Farmersville Times promoting the town’s Onion Festival.
